The Braille Attack Plan is designed to assist the student's IEP team in implementing assistive technology and assistive technology services for a visually impaired student in middle school.  The plan includes traditional assistive technology in the form of Braille print, as well as more current technology, such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text programs, cell phone applications, and screen reader programs.

Basic Student Profile

The student is a rising eighth grader who reads on a 4th grade level.  All of his academics are behind, largely due to a lack of competent technology and adequate instructional material.  He carries a Perkins Brailler from class to class which is large, noisy, and slow.  He produces documents on yellow folders, on which the teacher handwrites translation.  Documents are filed in cardbard boxes, causing a large amount of sapce to be used in work storage alone.  Due to the technological difficulty of instructing him and having him produce work, teaching him is amazingly slow and arduous.  A 30 minute test can frequently take 2 to 3 class periods.  For this reason, several of his core classes are conducted in a 1-on-1 setting, which has its own social impact.

His teacher hand makes tactile learning materials at her own expense, often spending hours on weekends making maps or diagrams with tactile materials.  The school system provides him with his own teacher, an adaptive PE teacher, a Braille teacher, and a visual impairment specialist.  All but his teacher are outsource contracted, making education for this child very costly.

He was the victim of a series of strokes as a baby, causing a problem in brain function that not only left him blind but also caused learning difficulties.  He is socially normal, albeit somewhat stunted socially and a bit immature.  He has the ability to learn similar to an LD child.  His learning problems prohibited his admission to the VA School for Deaf and Blind, and the lack of updated technology has challenged the teachers assigned to him to have a great deal of patience and creativity.

My interest is in finding affordable technology to assist the educational process for this child.  The current rate at which he can be educated is not effective, thereby slowing our ability to teach him.  I am convinced that there are affordable technological options, I would just like to find them.

More In-Depth Student Profile with Goals and Objectives

Summary Recommendations/steps:  This is where the turbo group members can put their recommendations (found in the technology tools assignment) in a couple of sentences.

  1. The student should obtain a laptop computer capable of running all of the software/programs listed in the attach plan.  A person will need to install and set up each of the software programs and hardware items listed in the attach plan.
  2. For Text-to-Speech issues the student and teacher should purchase a subscription ("teacher pack") and establish a profiles at www.spokentext.com.  This will enable nearly unlimited use of text-to-speech applications in a web-based program that will store audio files online and serve as a one-source provider of all of their text-to-speech needs. They will establish a podcast address and email forwarding services with the provided web addresses.
  3. The student should obtain an Apple iPod Nano and have it set up to use the vocal menus (from the Microsoft Vista operating system).  iPod should be set up so that it can be easily docked with the laptop while online.
  4. In order to dictate speech to be translated to text, navigate webpages, create e-mail, and utilize Microsoft Outlook for planning purposes, the student should obtain Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred Version 10 for installation on the laptop.

Questions:

Are there advantages to using a braille writer rather than a qwerty keyboard?   It appears there are no significant advantages to using a braille writer.  The qwerty keyboard offers several advantages especially the compatibility with standard keyboards.

What are the best processes and tools for learning the qwerty keyboard if you are blind?   A Braille Keyboard is a qwerty keyboard with the corresponding Braille letters made into each key. Talking Typing Teacher is a keyboarding program designed for visually impaired students. It is completly oral with two different voices to make it easier to follow along with the instructions.

What is the best setup vis-a-vis printing braile?  The Imprint Spot Dock by Tiger Inc.

What is the best setup for qwerty english language word processing?

What is the best electronic organizer for the blind?  The Dragon "Naturally Speaking" software interfaces with Microsoft Outlook which has an entire organizational system including calendar, contacts, etc.

Does "Talking Typing Teacher" have enough auditory prompts for a person who is blind to use?  Yes.

Our best methodology to learn qwerty keyboarding? Talking Typing Teacher allows the student to explore the keyboard before starting a lesson. It explains orally where the student's fingers should be by row and what letter each finger should type. The lessons are premade but the teacher can change the lessons to meet the need of the student. Using the Braille keyboard with this program can help the student to locate and remember where the keys are. Later he can use a standard qwerty keyboard to prove mastery of the keys.
