SMARTNotebook Math Instruction for Low Incidence


  • This lesson will focus on number sense, aligned SOL standard MN-S2 (students in this classroom will be taking the VAAP). The student will practice number recognition skills, and do activities to connect the number to it’s value. The lesson will use concrete and virtual manipulatives, online math activities, and concentrate interactive SMARTBoard activities.

    X enjoys the computer and technology, so the integration of different technologies into the lesson will be motivating to X. X responds to a simple reward system, and must be reinforced frequently; therefore, a behavior management system will be included. Student X also has significant social needs, therefore social skill instruction will be included at every step of the content lesson. 

    Explanation of Computer-Based Activity 

    The SMARTBoard Notebook activities satisfy these needs by providing a motivating medium for instruction. The lesson is designed for students with low-incidence disabilities who access the Aligned Standards of Learning. It can be used to provide direct instruction to an individual student, paired students, small group, or whole class, with guided and independent practice opportunities. Activities can be easily modified, used for remediation/repetition, or extended based on the needs of the student. The lesson does not require students to write, rather incorporates opportunities for them to independently manipulate items, draw pictures, or move around the room. Most instructions are a single directive at a time, with each page focusing on one task or skill.  

    Lesson Title:     Numbers and Values

    Grade Level: 7th and 8th; Self-Contained, Low-Incidence disabilities classroom

    Subject: Math
    Topic: Numbers and Number Sense
    aSOL: MN-S 2 (aligned with SOL K.2)

    The student, given a set containing ten items or fewer, will

    a) Tell how many items are in the set by counting the number of items orally

    b) Select the corresponding numeral from a given set

    Content Goal:

    In this lesson, the student will practice number recognition and the value of numbers 1-10, focusing on one numeral each day (for this lesson, numeral is 3).

    Objectives:

    1. Student will identify numeral given the visual choice and auditory choice

    2. Student will associate numeral with a numerical value.

    3. Student will match numerical value to physical objects of that number.

    Life-Skills Goal

    In this lesson, the student will practice appropriate social interaction by asking and answering math-related questions with classmates.

    Life-Skill Objectives

    1. Student will become more comfortable with basic greeting procedures.

    2. Student will become more comfortable with engaging in ongoing conversations.

    Materials

    ·        Smartboard (and all needed technological supports)

    ·        Smartboard activity

    ·        Computer

    ·        Numbers and Values PowerPoint

    Procedure
    Introduction

    ·        Teacher will model appropriate greeting and opening to lesson, while introducing the activity

    ·        Teacher will repeat appropriate greetings with instructor, aides, and eachother

    ·        Teacher will introduce one numeral to focus on for the day, ie numeral “3”

    ·        Students will review learned numerals so far, up until number 3, using Numbers and Values PowerPoint

    Small-Group/Individual Activity

    ·        Students will be broken up individually or into small groups

    ·        Students will participate in SmartBoard activities in small-groups or individually, identifying numeral “3” among other numerals, verbally or by pointing.

    ·        Student will recognize numeral given a variety of prompts in order to progress through SmartBoard Activity.

    Whole-Group Activity

    ·        After small-group/individual activity time, the students will engage in a whole-class exercise where they will apply the skills counting themselves, other students, teachers, aides, and objects in the classroom. 

    Closing

    ·        Students will answer questions together within a discussion based on the lesson, verbally, pointing to or typing their response.

    ·        Repeated modeling of directions and content as needed; Receive auditory or visual instructions at an appropriate developmental level

    Behavior Management

    ·        Student X will be rewarded for positive social interaction and completion of tasks using a simple reward system in which he receives 5 minutes of computer time for a favorite activity. He will work towards use of a token reward system. 

    ·        Student will independently access favorite sites via a Delicious Bookmark
